Surreal landscape oil painting with autumn leaves

Someone asked about my recent work, Limb- is it a digital piece? I don’t have any negative opinions about digital artwork (although I don’t agree with AI execs training their products for free off of hardworking artists). As far as my own art goes, I enjoy making use of digital tools in the design process but my goal always is a handcrafted painting or tattoo using classical analog skills. I’ve posted here the reference I used for Limb- you can see how aspects of the reference are pretty rough. I don’t generally take my compositional layout any further than necessary, and leave plenty of room for discovery/invention in the final rendering of the artwork. In this case much of the time spent with the reference was in fine tuning the light, color and value to get the mood just right, although the finished painting includes on-the-fly choices I made while dialing in the nuance of the piece. My process is often a hybrid of digital and analog- but I’ll always love making “real” things.
